The World's Strangest Gym

Nineteen-century Swedish physician Gustav Zander built what could be described as the first "gym" in the sense that the word is used today. Rejecting arguments that blood-letting, purging, or other ‘cures' contributed to good health, Zander promoted exercise and created a series of bizarre, history-defining workout machines.

BY THE NUMBERS: FACEBOOK'S WEIRD STALKER FEATURE

If you're anything like us, yesterday's news that Facebook had introduced a supposed "Stalker Feature" sent waves of panic down your stalker-y spine. After all, the hallmark of Facebook has always been its anonymity-news that exes were now aware that their profiles were obsessively checked (by you!) each morning before work had users everywhere saying in earnest: "We are never searching for anyone on this thing again."

Why You Might Soon Think You're Hearing Things

First Big Brother was watching. Now Little Brother (open market) might just whisper in your ear.How will decent hard-working adbusters fight against this?Reported in the Ottawa Citizen:"A technology that beams sound directly into people's ears has advertisers salivating, but as Vito Pilieci writes, critics fear yet another invasion of privacy. After more than a decade of development, technology that directs a beam of sound straight into a person's eardrums is ready for primetime."The new technology has attracted some critics who worry that it gives advertisers far too much power to invade a consumer's privacy when promoting their products where shoppers congregate. Hypersonic sound technology aims to eventually make blaring loudspeakers and broadcast marketing messages obsolete in stores and malls."In December, the A&E Television Network used the technology on a busy downtown Manhattan street to promote its show, Paranormal State. The new program is about ghost hunters who investigate haunted locations, and people walking by an advertisement heard voices whispering, Who's there? What's that? It's not your imagination."

The Hunt for 'The Splasher'

Shepard Fairey, Soho, splashed in January. Photomontage by Matthew Huber.REVOLUTIONARY CREATIVITY DOES NOT SHOCK OR ENTERTAIN THE BOURGEOISIE, IT DESTROYS THEM. OUR STRUGGLE CANNOT BE HUNG ON WALLS. DESTROY THE MUSEUMS, IN THE STREETS AND EVERYWHERE.The manifesto ended with a warning: THE REMOVAL OF THIS DOCUMENT COULD RESULT IN INJURY, AS WE HAVE MIXED THE WHEATPASTE WITH TINY SHARDS OF GLASS.So began my tortuous descent into the curious case of the Splasher -a scandal that had gripped the city's underground art scene for months.

lost black kitten

i live on 36th between belmont and stark. i adopted a kitten yesterday. she's black, very slinky, 6.5 pounds, 11 years old and front-declawed, so she's supposed to stay inside (and i was keeping her in the bedroom for the first couple days). my boyfriend accidentally left the bedroom door cracked when he left for work, and she's gone. the basement, which she had access to, has several gaps in the foundation to the outside. i've looked all over the house for her and my friend and i went through the basement with a flashlight. if you have any information, or see her, please hold on to her and call me at 503.995.9187. i'm panicked and heartbroken. had her from the ohs just since last evening. she's not wearing a collar.

Troops = golf

The president was asked in an interview yesterday how he personally acknowledges the lives lost and the many sacrifices that our soldiers and their families have given in the Iraq War.

See what his answer, here. Seth says it better than I could.

Melting Corpses

With both burials and crememation harming the environment, meet the future of disposing of dead bodies: dissolving them with lye. Called alkaline hydrolysis, the process is already used to get rid of animal carcasses. Someday soon we'll all be melted down to a brown goo and flushed down the drain after we die, but for now it's still illegal to perform lye-dissolving on human bodies because of politicians and religious leaders who say its "undignified."

Please Help! Legal Questions

Hi, guys. I'm new here and I need some information. I've been accused of a greatly serious crime. Though I spoke with a lawyer yesterday, I used my $35 initial consultation fee and neglected to ask a couple of questions. There's no way I have the kind of money needed to retain a lawyer. Maybe you guys can be kind enough to help with a couple questions.

The lawyer I spoke with asked for a retainer of $10,000. What is a retainer, exactly? He said his fee on such matters is $200 an hour. Is that over and above the $10,000 retainership?

Also, what I've been accused of, I was accused of back in the early 70s, as a minor. It never went to trial and the police officers found no basis for the accusation. I had my records expunged when I was 18 or 21. How far back does the police files go, and are potentially felony criminal offences expunged?

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Philip Morris in the Driver's Seat on FDA Tobacco Bill

title=The proposed Food and Drug Administration tobacco bill currently under consideration would ban artificial flavors like cinnamon and cherry from cigarettes, but strangely gives special protection to menthol. Public health advocates wonder why menthol has been exempted from the bill, especially when it masks the harsh taste of cigarettes for beginners. A 2006 study also showed that menthol makes it harder for addicted smokers to quit. Menthol brands are also disproportionately popular among African Americans; seventy percent of blacks smoke menthols, compared to only 30 percent of whites. While African Americans smoke less than whites overall, they suffer higher rates of cancer and other tobacco-induced diseases. Despite all this, legislators believe that menthol cannot be eliminated as a cigarette flavoring under the bill because menthol is crucial to the $70 billion cigarette market. It is of particular importance to Philip Morris, which has been planning for, and driving FDA regulation of cigarettes since 1999. The watered-down terms resulted from legislators' belief that the bill won't pass without PM's buy-in.

Big Push for Big Oil

Faced with a national outcry over the high price of gasoline and soaring profits for energy companies, the American Petroleum Institute has launched a multimillion-dollar PR and advertising campaign to cinvince the public that "rising energy prices are not the producers' fault and that government efforts to punish the industry, especially with higher taxes, would only make pricing problems worse," reports Jeffrey H. Birnbaum. Consumer groups such as the Consumer Federation of America are complaining
